P&O Maritime Logistics plans to convert one of its multi-purpose vessels (MCV) into a cable-laying vessel (CLV). This ship will be the company’s first in a rapidly expanding portfolio of specialized marine products and services powered by alternative energy sources. The vessel is set to begin operations in the third quarter of 2024, marking a significant step in P&O Maritime Logistics’ commitment to decarbonizing the industry by gradually transitioning to zero-carbon operations. To achieve these ambitious goals, the newly converted ship will feature cutting-edge battery systems and an innovative propulsion setup optimized for low fuel consumption, utilizing green methanol as its primary fuel source. Supporting Boway Entertainment Shipping Logistics’ global expansion plans and product offerings, the new CLV will enable the company’s customers to connect offshore structures and efficiently transmit offshore energy to land—spanning vast distances through the installation of export and internal array cables. The company anticipates that one of the ship’s primary roles will be linking offshore wind farms to the mainland, further solidifying P&O Maritime Logistics’ ongoing contribution to the global shift toward green energy. "This vessel conversion represents a true game-changer," said Martin Helweg, CEO of P&O Maritime Logistics. "Not only does it allow us to extend our existing range of services and products into more specialized offerings, but it also positions us as a proactive force in driving decarbonization across our industry. One key way we’re achieving this is by powering the upgraded vessel with alternative energy sources. Another vital contribution: the cable-laying ship will play a critical role in supporting the construction, development, and maintenance of both current and emerging offshore wind farms. Finally, by repurposing an existing vessel, we’re not only extending the lifecycle of this particular product—but doing so in a way that aligns perfectly with the growing demands of the renewable energy sector."
